Becoming a Help the Homeless Beneficiary
The Help the Homeless Beneficiary Selection Committee has already selected the 2009 Help the Homeless Beneficiaries.
Each year, the Help the Homeless Program selects service providers as Help the Homeless Beneficiary Organizations. These organizations serve clients in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area that are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.Youth engagement and/or education are requirements for all Beneficiaries.
Beneficiary organizations can raise funds for their organizations by:
- Recruiting youth and adult walkers for the Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall.
- Hosting Mini-Walks in partnership with schools, community-based organizations, and faith-based groups.
- Recruiting donors and/or Sponsoring Partners to support their organization.
Eligible Beneficiary Organizations must have 501(c)(3) public charity status and focus on at least one of the following program areas:
- Permanent Affordable Housing for Homeless People: Production or preservation of affordable housing for homeless individuals and families.
- Permanent Supportive Housing: Housing that is linked to voluntary supportive services that assist homeless people with disabilities or health problems (e.g., alcohol or drug dependence, mental illness, or HIV/AIDS) so they can live as independently as possible in a stable affordable setting.
- Prevention: Screening services and housing resources (e.g., relocation, referral, tenant education, rental assistance, and rental vacancy information services) for clients most at risk of becoming homeless.
- Transitional Housing: Time-limited housing and services (usually with a 24-month maximum residency) that help to transition homeless individuals and families into permanent affordable housing.
- Social Services/Supportive Services: Social services to help homeless persons stabilize their lives (including, but not limited to, food programs, emergency shelter, case management, health care, child care, drug and alcohol treatment, job training/placement, housing counseling, and financial skills training).
- Emergency Shelter/Services: Temporary or transitional shelter and emergency services (e.g., clothing, food, legal, and medical services) for homeless people.
Information and application to be a Beneficiary for the 2010 Help the Homeless Program will be available online next Spring to nonprofit organizations in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
